How I learned the benefits of rugged devices the hard way

True story. I was biking to work one day, and while crossing railroad tracks, my smartphone went airborne.

The result? Ten hours of chaos and lost productivity.

By chaos, I mean:

  1. Driving to multiple appointments with no help from GPS or navigation apps (Funny how much we’ve grown to depend on these gadgets when we’re scooting around town.)
  2. Missing a scheduled call to my spouse—and thereby narrowly escaping divorce proceedings
  3. Seeing one decent-sized sales deal collapse, because I couldn’t respond to texts or cell phone calls most of a day

I could go on, but you get the point.

Then, after waiting only 90 minutes in line at the cell phone store, I was rewarded with a new $500 phone. Ouch.

Lesson learned. Next time, I’m going to avoid the madness and go rugged. I know I’ll be crossing those train tracks again.

Of course, getting through the day without a personal phone is one thing. The sudden failure of an enterprise device is another. Losing valuable data in the blink of an eye is a horror story I never want to experience.

Taking a tumble isn’t the only thing that can wipe out a smartphone or tablet. Chilly temperatures can drain the battery and cause performance problems. Here’s more information on smartphones and cold weather, along with tips for protecting your device.

If you’re thinking about upgrading to a rugged tablet, check out these guidelines on choosing the right level of durability for your needs.

Has your phone ever died after clattering to the ground one too many times? Or maybe your tablet never survived getting doused in coffee or left in the rain. Let’s commiserate. Please share your terrifying tales of device failure.
