But the broader category of real-time location and tracking technology includes several distinct approaches, each suited to different use cases, cost profiles, and operational requirements.

Passive RFID tags have no internal power source. They’re activated by the electromagnetic field of a reader and respond with their ID. The result is a point-in-time read: you know the tag was at a specific location when it passed through a reader field or was scanned by a handheld device.
This is the right choice for the vast majority of use cases:
Tags cost as little as $0.10 today and are trending toward $0.05. No batteries. No battery management. Standard technology means a tag from one manufacturer can be read by a reader from another. About 90–95% of current deployments use passive RFID.
Active RFID: real-time location for high-value assets
Active RFID tags have their own power source and broadcast continuously, allowing readers to determine location in real time rather than just at fixed checkpoints. The tradeoff: tags cost more (battery management is required), and the system infrastructure is more complex.
Use cases where active RFID makes sense:
Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): healthcare and indoor asset tracking
BLE tags broadcast a low-power signal picked up by BLE receivers. Read range is typically shorter than active RFID, but BLE infrastructure (readers, gateways) is often lower cost and BLE is widely supported in mobile devices.
Healthcare is the primary use case: knowing where equipment is located in real time for emergency access, reducing the time clinical staff spend searching for infusion pumps, wheelchairs, and other movable assets. BLE is also used in some retail and office environments for asset management.
UWB provides the highest location precision of any RFID-adjacent technology — accurate to centimeters in some implementations. It’s used when you need to know not just that an asset is in a general zone, but exactly where it is within a large space.
